In 2002 Stolt Offshore commissioned Wale Marine to design a dry dock blocking line to support their 25,000 Tonne derrick laybarge the Seaway Polaris in the Cape Town dry dock in order for them to do routine maintenance on the vessel.
In order to remove the vessels azimuth thruster units it was necessary to make nominally 3 metre high reinforced concrete docking blocks each capable of sustaining 200 Tonnes with the block weight not exceeding 10 Tonnes. The contract was awarded a Fulton Award for excellence in the design of reinforced concrete.
After the first docking in 2002 the Polaris returned for subsequent dockings in 2008 and in 2012.
